About the Role
Full-time (30 hours) Class B school bus driver position for the 2026-27 school year. The driver is responsible for the safe transportation of students to and from school and on extracurricular trips, operating the vehicle in accordance with New Jersey state laws and Board policies.
Responsibilities
- Safe operation of a school bus, including 90-degree left and right turns, driving in a straight line over irregular surfaces, and backing out of a garage bay using mirrors.
- Perform pre- and post-trip bus inspections, reporting any defects to the dispatcher.
- Daily cleaning of the bus interior, including sweeping, removing litter, and ensuring seatbelts are untangled and accessible.
- Timely pick-up and drop-off of students as directed.
- Adhere to instructions from the Director of Transportation or dispatcher, verbally or in writing.
- Operate the entrance door and two-way radio exclusively.
- Complete Pre and Post Trip inspections using a tablet or physical forms if the tablet malfunctions.
- Maintain work-related records and prepare reports as directed.
- Project a positive image for the school district and serve as a role model for students and staff.
- Protect confidentiality of records and information about staff and students.
- Adhere to federal and state regulations, Board policies, and contractual obligations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
Daily Duties
- Report to work on time and leave the bus yard to make the first stop at the appointed time.
- Drive at a safe speed to arrive at school on schedule.
- Return school vehicle keys to the office after completing routes.
Weekly Duties
- Deep cleaning of school vehicles.
Monthly Duties
- Complete all "Safe Schools" bus driver training.
Requirements
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P), School Bus (S), and air brake endorsements.
- Ability to use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.
- Highest ethical and professional behavior when working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies.
Pay
Salary listed is for Class B Drivers.
Term of Employment
The term of employment shall not exceed one school year. Salary and term are determined by the Board of Education.
Evaluation
Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with New Jersey State law, the negotiated agreement, Board policy, and administrative prerogative.
