Bus Drivers are on the Classified Salary Schedule. New hires may bring in up to 8 years of previous experience in similar school-type settings, though starting salaries typically fall at the lower end of the range.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid Colorado commercial driver’s license with “S” endorsement (CDL training available upon hire)
  • Current First Aid Certificate and CPR (must acquire within 90 days of hire)
  • Pass the annual Colorado Department of Education School Bus Operators Test (written and skills)
  • Meet District’s requirements for insurability
  • Pass DOT physical
  • Record of safe driving per motor-vehicle record check
  • Pass drug/alcohol screen per Board Policy EEAEAA and EEAEAA-R

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate school buses in various weather conditions
  • Maintain control of passenger conduct and ensure safety of all passengers while en route
  • Implement discipline as necessary and monitor student behavior
  • Provide care and assistance to passengers, including aid in loading and unloading
  • Inspect equipment, instruments, safety devices, and vehicles to ensure compliance and proper operation before and after driving duties
  • Maintain adequate levels of fuel, engine oil, and coolant
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of district vehicles to comply with DOT, CDE, and District 8 regulations, policies, and standards
  • Inspect and ensure the interior and exterior cleanliness of the assigned bus
  • Communicate with Transportation personnel, students, and school officials
  • Distribute bus incident referrals to designated schools or locations
  • Report emergencies, breakdowns, delays, and accidents to the Transportation Supervisor in a timely manner
  • Attend safety and in-service meetings
  • Prepare for and execute emergency bus evacuation drills
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures governing vehicle and school transportation operations
  • Ability to operate all district transportation vehicles
  • Ability to apply and wear district-provided safety equipment
  • Ability to perform pre- and post-trip requirements unassisted
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and be a team player

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and taste or smell
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

Schedule

185 days per year – 5-hour workday positions available.
