About the role

Under general supervision, operates a school bus or activity bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations to transport students to and from school(s), facilities, or school-sponsored activities. Responsible for maintaining discipline of students while operating a school bus.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a bus over a route designated and approved by the Transportation Supervisor and the State Department of Education, following all state laws and regulations.
  • Performs all required pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Maintains discipline of students being transported; notifies parents/guardians as necessary and reports misconduct to the Transportation Supervisor using provided incident reports.
  • Maintains a clean appearance of equipment; reports vandalism or equipment failures to the immediate supervisor.
  • Provides written reports of road hazards on assigned routes.
  • Maintains up-to-date status of school bus registration forms and other student data within the transportation office.
  • Attends safety meetings and other required meetings.
  • Maintains up-to-date daily records on mileage, load counts, student data, maintenance reports, timesheets, and student assigned seating.
  • Exhibits acceptable conduct as a Lexington School District Two employee as prescribed by School Board policies and procedures.
  • Operates a two-way radio to maintain communication with schools and the main office.
  • Utilizes cleaning agents, office supplies, and other materials to maintain a clean school bus interior and exterior.
  • Maintains current commercial driver's license, required certifications, and medical certification.
  • Administers general first aid when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 18 years of age with an excellent motor vehicle driving record.
  • Up-to-date commercial driver's license.
  • Meets state and federal requirements for licenses, medical, and school bus operator certification.
  • Preferred: minimum of 2 years driving experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of all state and federal laws, regulations, and safety procedures pertaining to the operation of a school bus.
  • Knowledge of certification and license requirements for bus operation.
  • Understanding of the limitations and hazards involved in operating assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of requirements for maintaining the appearance of equipment and proper reporting procedures for student misbehavior, equipment failure, daily activity, mileage, and time records.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and daily bus routes, including the location of schools and other landmarks.

  • Able to operate a school bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations.
  • Ability to carry out duties in extreme weather conditions and noise.
  • Capable of completing assigned tasks safely, timely, and effectively.
  • Applies common sense, understanding, and independent judgment in performing duties.
  • Effectively communicates with students, supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Maintains required State Department of Education school bus operator’s certification, physical performance, and commercial driver’s license.
  • Handles emergency situations calmly and responsibly.

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted primarily on a school bus, driving in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, humidity) and poor road conditions.
  • Requires ability to work under stress related to duties that demand constant attention and awareness.
  • Physical demands include operating a school bus, handbrake, and other controls; maintaining cleanliness of equipment; and the ability to move a 125-pound object 30 feet in 30 seconds in case of an emergency.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires sedentary work involving walking, driving, or standing some of the time.
  • Involves exerting up to 125 pounds of force on a recurring basis.
  • Must complete the Physical Performance Test (PPT) in accordance with state requirements.
