Bus Driver, Full-Time & Part-Time

Stony Brook University is seeking temporary full-time (40 hours per week) and part-time (20 hours per week) Bus Drivers. Shifts and pass days vary, with an anticipated start date of August 20, 2026, and end date of May 26, 2027. Night and weekend work may be required. This is an FLSA nonexempt position, eligible for overtime.

About the Role

This position is designated as essential; incumbents are required to report to work or remain at work during emergencies, even if classes are canceled or campus operations are limited.

Responsibilities

• Drive a full-size passenger bus on and off SUNY property to transport passengers and materials.
• Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections, including checks of horn, directional lights, head/tail/parking/emergency lights, braking system, and tires. Complete required inspection forms.
• Monitor gauges, refuel vehicles, and supervise passenger loading/unloading.
• Maintain records of trips, mileage, stopovers, fuel, tolls, and passenger counts. Post manifests, inventories, and compile count sheets from all drivers when assigned.
• Transport passengers with disabilities and operate communication devices (radio/cellular phones) as needed.
• Report malfunctions and needed repairs to supervisors or maintenance staff. Compile daily bus logs from all drivers.
• Drive campus routes, department charters, and graduation-related trips for Stony Brook University.
• Clean, wash, and fuel buses, vans, and other state vehicles.
• Perform minor emergency repairs (e.g., replace bulbs, add air to tires, replace windshield wiper blades).
• Map routes, itineraries, and points of call for yourself and other drivers.
• Transport vehicles to and from vendors for repairs.
• Perform other duties or projects as assigned, appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Requirements

• Valid NYS CDL Class B Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brakes endorsement, and ability to obtain 19A certification as required by NYS DMV.
• Passenger endorsement without restrictions L, Z, N1, or N2 (considered non-qualifying).
• Motor vehicle record free from major violations or patterns of repeat violations. Out-of-state applicants must provide a valid license and driving abstract within five business days of a conditional offer and obtain a NYS license within 30 days of hire.
• Compliance with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (drug and alcohol testing).
• Successful completion of pre-employment controlled substance testing (employment cannot commence until results are received).
• Appointment contingent upon proof of identity and employment eligibility.
• Successful clearance of a background investigation.

Pay

$23.82 per hour.

• Internal and external searches will occur simultaneously; mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
