Responsibilities
- Aid students in entering or exiting the bus in a safe manner.
- Show the highest ethical standards and personal integrity; report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior to a supervisor or manager.
- Secure students using seat belts, car seats, or wheelchair restraints, as needed.
- Maintain a positive attitude and demonstrate good moral character and integrity to students.
- Maintain safety regulations and student conduct rules by monitoring passengers at all times.
- Report any violations or conduct concerns to the appropriate authority.
- Assist in the evacuation of the vehicle in case of emergency.
- Ensure that children take their belongings with them when leaving the bus.
- Help the driver keep the interior of the vehicle clean and presentable.
- Complete all required paperwork and submit it to the appropriate department in a timely manner.
- Display professional behavior and promote company goodwill.
- Be punctual and perform all responsibilities safely.
- Attend all assigned training, safety meetings, and in-service meetings.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old; for New York School Bus Assistants, must be at least 19 years old per state law.
- Must meet physical and medical requirements.
- Must satisfactorily complete and pass all training and attend safety meetings and in-service meetings to remain qualified.
- Must have a high degree of attention to detail and considerable dexterity to safely use various types of restraints, secure wheelchairs, etc.
- Must have the ability to relate to and work well with children.
- Must have strong professionalism and diplomatic skills to work with students, fellow employees, parents, and school district personnel.
- Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to lift and assist students when necessary.
