Burn Resuscitation Research Opportunity

About the role

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is offering translational large animal research opportunities in Burn Resuscitation Research at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA).

Responsibilities

• Engage in large animal research focused on burn resuscitation within the Organ Support and Automation Technologies Department at USAISR.
• Participate in an ongoing research project using the USAISR’s established swine burn model to examine the effect of automated resuscitation on outcomes following severe burn.
• Learn to operate experimental automated medical systems, including an automated burn resuscitation system, a hemorrhagic shock resuscitation system, a ventilator control system and/or an anesthesia control system.
• Disseminate results of studies through publications and presentations at national conferences.
• Gain experience and/or refine large animal surgical skills, including open laparotomy and percutaneous vascular access placement.
• Learn about clinical and health care practices in military medicine and military medical research.
• Participate in the research and development of new medical engineering products.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have a doctoral degree in physiology, biology, medicine or veterinary medicine.

Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

Schedule

This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
