Advanced Translational Research Experience in Trauma and Resuscitation

About the role

The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a doctoral fellowship at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command - Institute of Surgical Research (USAMRDC ISR).

Responsibilities

• Engage in hypothesis-driven experimental design focused on cellular therapies aimed at improving physiologic recovery and survival following severe trauma and hemorrhagic shock.
• Observe and contribute to the collection, analysis, and interpretation of experimental data relevant to tissue repair, immune modulation, and functional recovery after injury.
• Gain hands-on exposure to stem cell-based therapeutic concepts as applied to trauma and critical injury research.
• Strengthen skills in experimental planning, data collection, and outcome-focused analysis within a regulated biomedical research environment.
• Develop experience interpreting complex biologic and physiologic datasets relevant to trauma, resuscitation, and recovery.
• Enhance understanding of how preclinical data support translational decision-making for advanced therapeutics.
• Improve scientific communication skills through mentored discussions of results, limitations, and future research directions.
• Observe how collaborative research teams integrate cell therapy development with trauma outcome metrics.

Requirements

The qualified candidate will have a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, cellular and molecular biology, or physiology. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Schedule

This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care".

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
