About the role

Under general supervision, performs building cleaning, facilities maintenance and plant equipment operations work in schools. Work involves varied building cleaning duties and related facilities and grounds maintenance work. Employees receive on‑the‑job training in the use of cleaning and grounds tools and equipment and supplies to clean interiors and maintain grounds. The work is repetitive, requires sustained physical effort, includes heavy lifting and moving of furniture and equipment, and may involve exposure to accident‑injury hazards and disagreeable elements. Employees assigned to community use of schools must hold the appropriate certificate for checking or operating heating, ventilating, and air‑conditioning equipment. They must work Saturdays and Sundays to facilitate ICB use of MCPS facilities, maintain building security during weekend shifts, and are considered emergency personnel required to report to buildings during inclement weather.

Responsibilities

• Perform building cleaning, facilities maintenance, and plant equipment operations.
• Carry out varied building cleaning duties and related grounds maintenance work.
• Receive on‑the‑job training in the use of cleaning and grounds tools, equipment, and supplies.
• Move, lift, and handle heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.) as part of manual labor.
• Monitor building spaces and grounds to ensure a safe and secure environment.
• Use personal protective equipment and follow safety practices.
• Maintain building security during assigned weekend shifts.
• Report to work during inclement weather as emergency personnel.
• Obtain and maintain any required certificates (e.g., boiler operation, HVAC) as applicable.

Requirements

• Ability to lift and move heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.).
• Location may change; must provide own transportation to various school sites.
• Must be available to work Saturdays and Sundays and one or more shifts during the Monday‑Friday period.
