Building Mechanical (HVAC) Engineer

About the role

This role will work directly with engineers and other design staff to provide building mechanical and plumbing designs for facilities primarily serving the water and wastewater industries. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative multi-discipline environment to develop designs for new facilities, expansions, upgrades, and retrofits. Projects include both conventional design/bid/build and alternative delivery such as design/build.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the development of P&IDs, layout and design of equipment, and design of building mechanical and plumbing systems.
• Develop 3D models and produce contract documents.
• Conduct field investigations and provide support during construction.
• Assist the National Discipline Lead with updating company design standards and details.
• Perform routine tasks in HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler calculations as per provided guidelines.
• Learn to interpret mechanical, plumbing, building, and fire codes under supervision and guidance.
• Develop a basic understanding of NFPA standards and their application.
• Size ductwork, plumbing, and fire sprinkler distribution systems.
• Select appropriate HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler equipment for various projects.
• Draft and model HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler systems using AutoCAD and Revit software.
• Gain proficiency in using software to develop specifications for HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler equipment.
• Review HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler drawings/specifications and coordinate related tasks with other engineering disciplines.
• Adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
• Passed or working towards passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam required for Engineer in Training registration.
• Minimum of 0-2 years of relevant field experience and previous exposure to HVAC, plumbing, fire sprinkler systems, or related experience.
• Encouraged to certify in the SMS Framework in the first six months of being in the role.

Skills

• Sound basics in mechanical engineering concepts and principles.
• Ability to use engineering software and tools for drafting and modeling (AutoCAD, Revit).
• Basic understanding of HVAC, plumbing, and fire sprinkler systems and standards.
• Good problem-solving skills for handling routine tasks.

Pay

The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may vary depending upon skills, experience, and education.

• Location A: $64,000 - $87,000
• Location B: $71,000 - $96,000
