Building Maintenance Craftsman

Under the direction of the Chief of Public Facilities, the Building Maintenance Craftsman performs miscellaneous maintenance and repair tasks on municipal buildings and property. This position requires journeyman-level expertise in at least one trade such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, plastering, or other related disciplines. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

• Perform general repairs and maintenance on municipal buildings and property
• Operate and perform minor repairs on plumbing, HVAC systems, and automatic cleaning equipment
• Respond to building emergencies and security issues on an on-call basis
• Enforce building rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially
• Plan, assign, coordinate, and supervise the work of custodial staff
• Maintain clean and orderly conditions of public buildings, grounds, and equipment
• Adhere to fire prevention and protection protocols, building hazards, and safety precautions
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative staff, municipal employees, and the public
• Work independently and as part of a team

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Two (2) years of custodial experience
• One (1) year of supervisory experience
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
• Designated as essential personnel; regular onsite attendance required

Skills

• Journeyman-level expertise in at least one trade (carpentry, painting, plumbing, plastering, or related discipline)
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Thorough knowledge of practical computer operations and Microsoft Outlook
• Working knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in building maintenance
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience in a maintenance and/or custodial environment
• One year of experience with electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, or physical plant systems
• Experience with municipal maintenance or custodial work
