About the role

The Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer position within the Planning & Development Services department ensures compliance with building codes and regulations. This role involves inspecting and reviewing plans for residential and commercial building construction.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews plans and specifications for compliance with Bernalillo County Building Ordinance (BCBO) under State and National certified disciplines (building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical).
  • Evaluates permit applications for adherence to BCBO and relevant standards.
  • Performs field inspections to ensure construction work meets BCBO requirements.
  • Interacts with engineers, architects, contractors, and the public regarding plan review inquiries and corrections.
  • Provides technical guidance and support within the building code/plan review section.
  • Prepares reports and maintains files according to departmental standards.
  • Maintains permit/inspection report file systems and keeps records for statistical reports.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential records, plans, documents, and decisions requiring confidentiality.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five (5) years foreman level experience in general construction for Building Inspector.
  • International Code Council certified building inspector certification or obtain within nine (9) months from date of hire.
  • State of New Mexico certified inspector for the individual's primary discipline (building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical) or obtain within nine (9) months from date of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five (5) years recent work experience in the fields of general building construction, building inspection, plan review, and/or architectural design for Building Plan Reviewer.
  • International Code Conference building plans examiner B3 certification preferred for Building Plan Reviewer.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five (5) years journeyman level experience in electrical construction for Electrical.
  • International Code Council certified building inspector certification or obtain within nine (9) months from date of hire.
  • State of New Mexico certified inspector for the individual's primary discipline (building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical) or obtain within nine (9) months from date of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five (5) years journeyman level experience in plumbing and mechanical construction for Plumbing and Mechanical.
  • International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials certified inspector certification or obtain within nine (9) months from date of hire.
  • State of New Mexico certified inspector for the individual's primary discipline (building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical) or obtain within nine (9) months from date of hire.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • State of New Mexico certified inspector for the individual's primary discipline (building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical) or obtain within nine (9) months from date of hire.

Skills

  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $22.81 - $36.01 per hour.

Schedule

Hours are typically 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work as needed.
