Building Inspections Officer - City of Pleasant Grove
Job Summary
The City of Pleasant Grove is seeking a well-qualified, motivated Building Inspections Officer. This role involves enforcing building, plumbing, electrical, and gas codes, and City zoning ordinances. Employees ensure structures are safe for occupancy and/or use, and of the type approved for the site. They interact with contractors, workers in various building trades, homeowners, and the general public, providing guidance and enforcing codes.

Minimum Qualifications
- Driver’s license.
- Experience interpreting plans and structures for building code compliance (e.g., plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry).
- Experience in at least one of the following areas: Installing electrical systems; Installing and sizing heating and cooling systems and vents; Installing plumbing systems or gas piping; Performing structural framing/carpentry work; and overseeing or carrying out the residential or commercial construction.
Preferred Qualifications
- State-issued license or certification in plumbing, gas, mechanical, electrical, homebuilder, or general contractor.
- Stormwater certification.
- Any International Code Council-issued certification.
- Construction-related trade school certificate.
- Experience as a General Contractor or Home Builder/Remodeler.
- Experience as a foreman for a construction trade.
Typical Job Duties
- Conducts building inspections following professional inspections procedures and utilizing various testing methods and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances and adherence to zoning regulations.
- Enforces codes and ordinances by reviewing plans and conducting inspections to ensure compliance and safety.
- Conducts electrical inspections by comparing electrical constructions and installations to plan requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Conducts gas inspections by checking for gas leaks, vent lines are properly installed, and calculates BTUs of gas piping system to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Conducts general inspection activities for contractors by checking for valid permits, ensuring plans comply to relevant codes, and issuance of Certificates of Occupancy in accordance with professional inspections procedures so construction projects are compliant with codes.
- Conducts inspections related to life safety, handicap accessibility, and natural disasters by following professional inspections protocols and guidelines to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Reviews plans by comparing details of plans to code requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Conducts plumbing inspections by comparing aspects of construction to code requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Maintains inspection records by filing, researching, documenting records, calculating fees and preparing for court cases so accurate records are properly maintained in a timely manner.
Physical Demands
Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of walking, standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Work may involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment
Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as during regular field visits to external places of business, residence, or construction worksites.
