Pay

$21.95 per hour plus benefits. The hourly rate includes a mandatory 4.5% retirement contribution to the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).

This position is represented by the Oswego Custodial/Maintenance Association.

About the Role

The Building Engineer is an important member of the building staff, responsible for ensuring that the interior and exterior of the assigned building is neat, safe, and attractive. The Building Engineer works closely with all building custodians to plan and organize work with minimal interruptions while responding to emergencies immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the custodial and custodial/maintenance staff assigned to the building, trains staff as needed in cleaning and maintenance methods, and assists with the evaluation of custodians.
  • Monitors and certifies the time records of all custodial employees in the school for wage payments.
  • Wears a uniform daily while school is in session and ensures all custodians in the building are in uniform when the building is in use, including weekends.
  • Opens and secures the building each day and remains on school grounds during scheduled work hours.
  • Inspects and supervises the maintenance of grounds, trees, bushes, entrances, parking lots, tennis courts, and athletic fields. Performs yard-keeping tasks such as grass cutting and hedge trimming as necessary.
  • Performs general cleaning responsibilities, including dust-mopping and wet-mopping floors.
  • Keeps grounds free from rubbish and litter, and ensures entrances and sidewalks are free of snow and ice.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance and upkeep, including checking boilers, pumps, equipment, and air conditioning systems. Performs minor building repairs and changes light bulbs as needed.
  • Reports major repairs and any damage to school property immediately to the building principal.
  • Cleans up glass and arranges for emergency replacement of broken windows.
  • Assumes responsibility for fire safety.
  • Conducts monthly walkthroughs of the building to document its condition.
  • Communicates daily with the building principal and custodians regarding building activities, problems, time off, and vacation days.
  • Uses the Custodial Procedures Manual as the standard for building upkeep.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment, and prepares requisitions for replacements as needed.
  • Keeps ongoing records, schedules, and documentation regarding supplies, maintenance, and activities.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
  • Schedules the completion of work orders with the building principal.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Operations regarding programs, training, maintenance, supplies, and work orders.
  • Performs all other assignments and responsibilities as directed.
