About the role

The American Red Cross is seeking a Building Engineer for the Massachusetts region, based in Dedham with travel throughout the state. The primary facility in Dedham is a 148,000-square-foot, FDA-regulated environment. Experience in an FDA-regulated, Good Manufacturing Practice (GPM) facility is highly preferred.

Under minimal guidance, the Building Engineer will oversee and conduct maintenance and repairs in regulated American Red Cross buildings, advising on building systems, electricity, equipment repair, design, and general maintenance. The role requires a foundational knowledge of structural systems, control systems, code issues, and the ability to identify problematic mechanical devices. All duties must comply with standard operating procedures and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Responsibilities

• Act as the onsite subject matter expert on building engineering, advising on planning for building systems, electricity, equipment repair, design, and general maintenance.
• Perform specialized service work in building systems, including mechanical, electrical/electronic, hydraulics, carpentry, or machine servicing.
• Assist in operations and maintenance issues, troubleshooting, and problem-solving as required.
• Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on all HVAC equipment and related machinery.
• Ensure all regulatory operations meet minimum compliance standards.
• Maintain ongoing regulated training and role-specific training to comply with regulatory requirements.
• Enforce organization safety policies, regulations, and procedures related to facilities management.
• Perform facility safety and fire extinguisher inspections, schedule fire drills, and maintain safety documentation.
• Oversee emergency generators and issue security access cards.
• Monitor security surveillance systems and equipment as needed.
• Maintain the facility maintenance work-order system, including coordination, timely submission of work orders, and dispatch for emergency requests.
• Provide administrative support, including coordination of preventative maintenance schedules, ordering department supplies, recording and logging maintenance, and submitting work orders.
• Maintain accurate operational logs of building equipment.
• May receive regulated supplies and oversee bio-waste pick-ups, supplies, and destruction manifests.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent trade school certificate required.
• Current Universal Refrigerant license, OSHA 10, and HVAC certification required.
• ASHE (American Society for Healthcare Employees) membership or ability to obtain and maintain preferred.
• Minimum 7 years of related experience, preferably in laboratory, hospital, SDS, or CGMP-controlled environments.
• Competence in both electrical and plumbing areas.
• Basic working knowledge of emergency power generators.
• Ability to assess building envelope (roof, structure, etc.).
• Familiarity with NFPA (fire codes), building codes, NEC (electrical codes), PMs, and PM management systems.
• Experience with training teams, capital project forecasting, and annual budgets.
• Prior experience in vendor, partner, and supplier relationship management.
• Ability to read and understand MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and wiring diagrams.
• Ability to work on a team and operate independently with minimal supervision.
• Some travel required; a current, valid driver’s license is necessary.
• Combination of education and experience may satisfy requirements if total years meet the minimum specified.

Pay

The salary range for this position in Massachusetts is $101,400 – $108,096. The American Red Cross sets salary ranges based on geographic location, and the specific salary will be shared during the phone screening based on your location and qualifications. This position may also be eligible for relocation assistance.
