Building Automation Services Assistant

About the role

Reporting to the BAS Operations Supervisor, the Building Automation Services Assistant will assist technicians to monitor, operate, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, and replace pneumatic, electric, electronic, and direct digital controls systems associated with campus HVAC building controls and chiller controls. The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

This position is designated as Emergency Personnel. May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.

Responsibilities

• Assist in monitoring, operating, maintaining, modifying, troubleshooting, and replacing pneumatic, electric, electronic, and direct digital controls systems for HVAC and chiller controls.
• Verify readings and measurements on building HVAC systems.
• Work from drawings, schematics, blueprints, and job layouts.
• Use a variety of hand tools.
• Perform duties requiring physical effort, including safely moving and handling heavy objects (50+ pounds), maneuvering materials on stairs, climbing ladders/scaffolds, and working for long periods standing, walking, reaching, bending, or pushing/pulling.
• Work in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree or current enrollment in an Associate’s Degree program for Instrumentation & Control Automation Technology or a directly related field.
• Experience or successful coursework in programming, startup, modifying, troubleshooting, and repair of one or more direct digital control systems.
• Experience or training/education in verifying HVAC system readings and measurements.
• Ability to work from technical drawings, schematics, blueprints, and job layouts.
• Proficiency with hand tools.
• Strong computer skills, including experience with Excel and Word.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to comprehend and analyze complex interrelationships between mechanical and electrical systems.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Additional experience or advanced coursework in building automation systems.

Pay

$19.50–$22.00 per hour. Overtime eligible (non-exempt). Maximum of 1,500 hours per year.
