The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) is seeking a Building Envelope Architect/Engineer to join their Facilities Management team in Charlotte, North Carolina. This hybrid-eligible position offers the opportunity to work remotely one day per week with supervisor approval. Relocation assistance is available for discussion.

UNC Charlotte’s Facilities Management team is responsible for creating and sustaining the physical environment that supports the University’s students, faculty, staff, research, and broader community. From planning and building to operating and maintaining campus facilities, the team takes a long-term view of how spaces perform and how they contribute to the University experience. This newly created position offers the chance to become a key technical resource within Facilities Management, helping connect smart design decisions with long-term building performance and maintainability. You’ll influence standards and projects across campus while collaborating with architects, engineers, external design partners, project teams, and skilled trades professionals.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Asset Management, the Building Envelope Architect/Engineer will serve as UNC Charlotte’s primary technical authority for the physical integrity and performance of the campus built environment. Your scope will span building enclosures—including roofs, walls, glazing, air barriers, and moisture management—as well as interior architectural finishes and vertical transportation systems. This role bridges design and operations, bringing a lifecycle perspective to projects to ensure new construction and renovations are durable, maintainable, code-compliant, and suited to North Carolina’s humid subtropical climate. This is a hands-on position combining strategic technical leadership with fieldwork alongside skilled trade technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the University’s technical authority for building enclosure systems, interior architectural finishes, and vertical transportation systems.
  • Establish, maintain, and enforce Design and Construction Manual (DCM) standards using building science principles related to thermodynamics, moisture dynamics, airflow, and long-term performance.
  • Review design documents and participate in project planning to identify building envelope, code compliance, maintainability, and lifecycle concerns.
  • Direct Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) activities for capital projects to ensure constructed systems perform as intended.
  • Conduct forensic investigations of building failures, including water intrusion, air barrier deficiencies, moisture-related problems, and flooring substrate issues.
  • Develop practical remediation strategies balancing technical performance, lifecycle cost, and maintenance requirements.
  • Partner with Maintenance Operations and skilled trades (Envelope, Paint, Flooring, Carpentry, and Elevator teams) to ensure design decisions support long-term maintainability.
  • Serve as a technical liaison with external architects, engineers, consultants, and design firms, advocating for materials and systems that protect the University’s lifecycle interests.
  • Support asset management and lifecycle planning for building enclosure, interior finish, and vertical transportation systems.
  • Protect the integrity of fire ratings, thermal boundaries, acoustic separations, and other critical building systems during renovations and modifications.
  • Apply requirements of the North Carolina International Building Code, NC Energy Conservation Code, and ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators.
  • Champion a “Total Building Performance” approach to reduce risk, improve durability, and minimize total cost of ownership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering and at least five years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Degree(s) from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Strong knowledge of building science principles, including thermodynamics, moisture dynamics, and airflow management as they relate to building envelopes.
  • Ability to evaluate building performance and diagnose complex system failures.
  • Experience working across the design-to-operations lifecycle and collaborating with architects, engineers, contractors, facilities professionals, and skilled trades.
  • Knowledge of relevant building, energy, life-safety, and vertical transportation codes and standards.
  • Ability to communicate technical recommendations clearly and negotiate material or system selections with external design partners.
  • Comfort moving between design review, technical meetings, field investigations, site walks, and active facilities environments.
  • Valid driver’s license, as the role requires site visits and regular operation of University vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) licensure.
  • Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider (BECxP), Registered Roof Observer (RRO), or Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) credential.
  • Advanced expertise in building envelopes within humid subtropical climates.
  • Experience investigating water intrusion, air barrier failures, flooring substrate issues, and other building-performance concerns.
  • Deep familiarity with the North Carolina International Building Code, NC Energy Conservation Code, and ASME A17.1.
  • Licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (if required for the position).

Pay

The anticipated salary range for this position is $98,307–$102,879.
