Builder (Millwork Assembler)

About the role

The Builder (Millwork Assembler) is responsible for the hands-on construction, assembly, and fitting of custom millwork components including but not limited to cabinetry, casework, built-ins, architectural woodwork, and furniture. Working from shop drawings, work orders (if available), and cut lists, the Builder transforms machined and sawn components into finished cabinet boxes, frames, and millwork units. This role requires a strong understanding of cabinet construction methods, joinery techniques, woodworking tools, and quality standards. The Builder works closely with the CNC, Saw, PLAM, Finishing, and Hardware teams to ensure all assembled products meet dimensional accuracy, structural integrity, and aesthetic quality requirements.

Responsibilities

• Assemble cabinet boxes, face frames, bases, drawers, doors, shelving units, and custom millwork components from pre-cut and machined parts.
• Read and interpret shop drawings, assembly drawings, work orders (if available), and cut lists to determine assembly sequences and specifications.
• Apply adhesives, wood glue, dowels, biscuits, fasteners, pocket screws, and dado joints to secure components per design specifications.
• Use clamps, assembly jigs, and squaring fixtures to ensure cabinets and millwork units are square, plumb, and true.
• Perform edge banding application and trimming on panel edges as required.
• Assemble face frames, stile-and-rail door frames, and applied molding details per architectural millwork specifications.
• Fit and trim components to ensure proper alignment, spacing, and clearances on doors, drawers, and shelves.
• Sand assembled units to the appropriate grit level in preparation for finishing; address surface defects, glue squeeze-out, and mill marks.
• Fill nail holes, gaps, and imperfections with appropriate wood fillers and putty prior to sanding.
• Identify and correct any structural or aesthetic defects before units advance to the next stage of production.
• Verify all dimensions, squareness, and fit of assembled components against shop drawings and specifications.
• Inspect all incoming components from CNC and Saw departments for accuracy before beginning assembly.
• Flag and communicate any discrepancies in parts, dimensions, or materials to the Shop Foreman.
• Mark completed assemblies with job number and elevation identification for downstream tracking.
• Operate a full range of hand tools and power tools including drills, nail guns, brad nailers, routers, sanders, biscuit joiners, and edge banders.
• Maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition; report damaged or worn tooling to the Shop Foreman.
• Keep work area clean, organized, and free of material waste and debris.
• Assist with staging completed assemblies for finishing, hardware installation, and delivery.
• Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and OSHA standards at all times.
• Clean the shop as directed and load and empty trash as directed.

Requirements

• Vocational training in carpentry, cabinetmaking, or woodworking preferred.
• Minimum 1–3 years of hands-on experience in cabinet building, millwork assembly, or custom woodworking production.
• Experience with frameless (European) and face-frame cabinet construction methods.
• Familiarity with architectural millwork standards (AWI/AWMAC).

Skills

• Proficiency in reading shop drawings, assembly diagrams, and work orders.
• Strong knowledge of wood joinery, cabinet construction, and assembly methods.
• Skilled in the operation of power tools including drills, nail guns, routers, sanders, and biscuit joiners.
• High attention to detail with strong commitment to producing square, plumb, and high-quality assemblies.
• Ability to work independently on assigned jobs and as part of a team during larger production runs.
• Good time management and ability to prioritize work to meet production deadlines.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods during assembly work (8–10 hours per shift).
• Ability to lift and handle assembled cabinet units and panel components up to 80 lbs.
• Must be comfortable in a shop environment with wood dust, adhesives, and machinery noise with proper PPE.

Pay

Based on experience.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM, Full-Time; overtime available based on production demand.

Work Environment

This role is performed in a production millwork shop with regular exposure to wood dust, adhesives, machinery noise, and finishing materials. PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, dust masks, and steel/composite toed shoes are required and provided. The work environment is collaborative and fast-paced, with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, teamwork, and quality production.
