Build Staff Carpenter

Build Staff Carpenter position focused on onsite construction tasks for new builds, rehabs, and owner-occupied residential repairs. Work collaboratively with Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia staff, subcontractors, homeowners, and volunteers to uphold quality and safety standards while promoting the mission to eliminate substandard housing and revitalize neighborhoods.

Responsibilities

  • Construction & technical work
    • Perform home construction across skills including rough framing, installation of windows, doors, finish trim, flooring, kitchen and bath renovations, drywall, siding, and exterior details.
    • Independently plan, organize, and execute work order tasks efficiently.
  • Project coordination
    • Coordinate with Project Managers and Lead Carpenters for project planning, including material needs, workflow sequencing, and volunteer labor utilization.
    • Uphold HFHP, OSHA, EPA, and BPI safety standards on all job sites.
    • Maintain tools and equipment; train staff or volunteers in proper use and care.
    • Collaborate with Project Managers and BUILD team staff to complete projects on time and on budget.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of professional residential carpentry and construction experience.
  • Ability to perform a range of residential construction tasks, from framing to finishes.
  • Strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with local building codes.
  • Commitment to Habitat Philadelphia’s mission and values; ability to work respectfully with diverse communities.
  • OSHA 30 certification or willingness to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license and clear driving record.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of, or willingness to be trained in, basic plumbing, electrical, and HVAC repair.
  • Understanding of building science principles and house-as-a-system concepts.
  • Prior volunteering experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent work in unconditioned spaces (heat of summer, cold of winter).
  • Comfortable working at heights, on ladders, and scaffolding.
