Bricklayer - Refractory
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Responsible for providing various types of support regarding refractory bricks, ceramic fiber material, castable refractories, refractory plastics, fasteners, various furnace castings, expanded metal sheets, and steel bars or plates throughout the manufacturing plant. This includes, but not limited to, troubleshooting and repairs to construct refractory linings and castings on all types of furnaces, thermal barriers and hot boxes. Must be able to function safely in a fast-paced environment and be responsible to maintain equipment in a craftsman-like manner. Ability to work in conjunction with other maintenance crafts, engineering and production personnel.
DUTIES
- Receives work order and verbal instructions from supervisor, manager, coordinator, etc.
- Troubleshoots job at the machine by observing operations and interacting with operations leadership and employees.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, and process flow diagrams as needed to perform tasks.
- Removes damaged refractory and disposes hazardous materials per guidelines.
- Absorbs equipment for cutting brick to size and shape.
- Assists in the loading and unloading of refractory supply needs.
- Ensures the setup of refractory for movement within the operations with the use of cranes, mobile equipment, etc.
- Absorbs the mixing of mortar and castable refractory is accurate to specific needs.
- Installs refractory materials in various furnaces.
- Constructs arches, lintels, thermal barriers and tops for electric arc furnaces.
- Repairs or replaces furnace castings in conjunction with refractory repairs. (cheek plates, breast plates, sill plates, door angles, and castings)
- Makes modifications to furnace structure, heat shields and hot boxes to install furnace refractories.
- Operates in a safe manner and observes safety rules and guidelines.
- Must be able to meet safety requirements including ANSI fall protection expectations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/TRAINING PREFERENCE
- Minimum of three years refractory installation experience preferred.
- The ability to read blueprints, operate vehicles, work from heights, and work in various environmental conditions is required.
- The ability to weld and acetylene burn, is preferred.
- Applicants must meet the ANSI fall protection requirement.
- Applicants must be willing to upgrade their knowledge and skills as new technology and methods are introduced.
