Breaker Technician
Responsibilities & Expectations
- Apply mechanical, electrical and related knowledge to repair, rebuild, modify and test low and medium voltage circuit breakers.
- Perform the systematic disassembly and reassembly of circuit breakers and subassembly parts from an individual component level to a fully functional, operational unit.
- Evaluate, inspect, assess and document damage, repairs and maintenance required to repair, rebuild or modify circuit breakers and its components.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, ac and dc schematic diagrams, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals, breaker control wiring diagrams, and trip curves.
- Install and program custom retrofit trip unit kits per customer and manufacturers’ guidelines and specifications.
- Perform diagnostic tests using high current, high potential, insulation resistance, and contact resistance test sets to determine the condition of equipment.
- Properly prepare, clean and recondition components using a variety of techniques such as sandblasting, polishing, painting, plating and other methods.
- Maintain personal work area in a neat and organized manner that promotes efficient workmanship.
- Install optional control devices and control wiring using schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Produce routine reports and record, compute and process electrical test information in accordance with accepted, standard practice.
- Provide customer on-site support for field service operations.
- Provide and maintain personal tools.
- Perform other skilled or non-skilled duties as directed by supervisor.
Qualifications and Competencies
- 3+ years experience with electrical apparatus.
- A High School/ GED Diploma, or 2 year technical school or job-related certifications are a plus.
- Ability to perform the following tests: Primary current injection, secondary current injection, insulation, contact resistance, and high potential.
- Ability to understand the operation, application and care of test equipment; and proper use of multimeter scales & ranges.
- Ability to tear down, inspect, and rebuild with minimal assistance at least eight (8) different breaker families (eg. AK, DB, Magneblast, K-Line, LA, etc.).
- A strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to perform math calculations using basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to work under pressure and remain calm during stressful situations.
- Ability to take direction and act independently.
- Ability to work well with a team.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and stay organized.
- A self-starter and able to make quick decisions.
- Able to show a history of being reliable and dependable.
- Able to work overtime as required.
- Able to physically perform all required duties which may include: bending, lifting, carrying, squatting, climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, or standing for prolonged periods of time.
- Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment and work around industrial equipment.
- Able to travel and work in several different geographic locations (indoors & outdoors).
- Willingness to drive to jobs.
- Willingness to submit to the background and drug screening process.
