About the role

As part of the talented Boston Whaler team, a fiberglass laminator creates components for boats by applying fiberglass to a mold. This role ensures all areas of the mold are covered with a sufficient amount of resin-saturated fiberglass matting to provide the desired strength of the finished component. Tasks include using a chop gun or hands to press the resin-saturated fiberglass into the mold, removing air bubbles, and handling two-part molds with strategic placement of spacing blocks. Additional responsibilities include mixing resins and removing the cured product from the mold.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure required parts and raw materials are ready to run when scheduled.
  • Arrange material in a specific order or pattern according to documentation.
  • Spray fiberglass and/or lay sheets of fiberglass on part molds.
  • Press layers into place and use a roller to smooth out wrinkles or voids.
  • Use fiberglass chop guns and mil gauges to ensure proper material application.
  • Handle, install, position, and manipulate materials using hands, arms, and rollers.
  • Maintain clean and tidy material storage areas.
  • Participate in continuous improvement, cost-saving, EH&S, and Quality initiatives.
  • Operate material handling equipment such as platform trucks, forklifts, aerial work platforms, pallet jacks, and overhead hoists.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required, including respirators, gloves, chemical-resistant aprons, and suits.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 1+ years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand verbal or written instructions and exchange accurate information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proactive team player who is a self-starter with constant attention to improvement.
  • Excellent reasoning skills, including researching system discrepancies and kitting errors.
  • Basic reading comprehension and writing skills.
  • Ability to work from verbal and written instructions, use computer terminals, and complete routine paperwork.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work with multiple priorities and people.
  • High level of energy, creative thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Familiarity with Materials Resources Planning (MRP) software and systems.
  • Marine experience (preferred but not required).
  • Familiarity with modern warehousing practices and methods.

Working Conditions

  • Shop floor working environment that is non-climate controlled; temperature fluctuates with outside conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to high temperatures, including hot and humid environments, especially during summer months.
  • Moderate noise level with intervals of spikes.
  • Required to wear safety glasses, Tyvek aprons, half-mask respirators, and other PPE while on the production floor.
  • Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, resins, fiberglass dust, epoxy, composites, and other chemicals.
  • Ability to walk or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to regularly bend, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, reach, climb, and lift or move up to 35 pounds.
  • Vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Pay

The anticipated pay range for this position is $18.59 to $28.30 hourly. The actual base pay offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. Compensation decisions depend on candidate qualifications and business context.
