About the role

USBP is hiring immediately for full-time, career positions as Border Patrol Agents (BPA), where your prior law enforcement officer (LEO) experience may qualify you for higher-graded opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Deterring illicit activity and enhancing national economic prosperity by safeguarding borders and preventing illegal entry.
  • Performing physical searches, apprehending, restraining, and identifying violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
  • Utilizing surveillance, detection, and communication equipment to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats, and contraband.
  • Leading investigations and developing networks of informants to gather intelligence and evidence.
  • Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws using various forms of technology and complex systems.

Qualifications

  • GL-9: One year of specialized experience performing duties such as physical searches, apprehensions, and investigative reporting.
  • GS-11: One year of specialized experience as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official, including leading investigations and utilizing various forms of technology.

Benefits

  • Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11, $65,545 - $124,717 per year
  • Locality Pay: Varies by duty location
  • Overtime Pay: Up to 25%
  • Promotion to next higher grade level after completing 52 weeks in the lower grade level
  • Federal employment benefits including health and insurance plans, annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan

Pay

Salary for newly appointed agents varies from $65,545 - $124,717 per year, depending on duty location.

Schedule

Duty assignments available at the time of offer may include the Southwest Border, with prioritized locations like Sierra Blanca, TX; Presidio, TX; Sanderson, TX; Comstock, TX; Lordsburg, NM; Freer, TX; Hebbronville, TX; Ajo, AZ.

Benefits

  • Up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives for successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy and acceptance of a prioritized location.
  • Up to $40,000 in retention incentives distributed over the first four years.

Requirements

  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Residency: Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Age Restriction: Must be referred for selection before reaching 40th birthday
  • Veterans’ Preference: Eligible for Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment (VRA)
  • Formal Training: Detailed training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico
  • Language: Ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English
