About the role
USBP is hiring immediately for full-time, career positions as Border Patrol Agents (BPA), where your prior law enforcement officer (LEO) experience may qualify you for higher-graded opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Deterring illicit activity and enhancing national economic prosperity by safeguarding borders and deterring illegal entry.
- Performing physical searches, apprehending, and restraining individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
- Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence related to illegal entry.
- Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using various government assets.
Qualifications
- GL-9: One year of specialized experience performing duties such as physical searches, apprehending individuals, and using firearms.
- GS-11: One year of specialized experience performing duties such as leading investigations, apprehending violators, and utilizing complex technology.
Benefits
- Up to $60,000 in additional incentives for newly appointed Agents, including a $20,000 first-year incentive and a $40,000 retention incentive over the first four years.
- Excellent base pay, locality pay, overtime pay, and a range of federal employment benefits including health and insurance plans, leave programs, and the Thrift Savings Plan.
Pay
- Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11, $65,545 - $124,717 per year
- Locality Pay: Varies by duty location
- Overtime Pay: Up to 25%

Requirements
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Residency: Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
- Age Restriction: Must be referred for selection before reaching 40th birthday
- Veterans’ Preference: Eligible for Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment (VRA)
- Formal Training: Detailed at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico
