About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. Equally, you are an essential part of the bookstore team in maintaining the attractive presentation of the store and in ensuring its efficient running. You help unpack and shelve deliveries and tidy our displays. You work our registers in a quick and friendly manner, ensuring our customers receive a highly professional service.

Responsibilities

• Welcome customers, answer questions, and connect readers with appropriate titles and products.
• Maintain attractive store presentation and tidy displays.
• Unpack and shelve deliveries; keep stock organized.
• Operate registers quickly and friendly to provide professional service.
• Support receiving, unpacking, and accurate shelving of inventory.
• Assist café team when needed.
• Apply loss prevention procedures and de‑escalation techniques.
• Develop and use book knowledge to maintain sections, make recommendations, and support sales objectives.
• Build expertise in educational toys, games, hobby/collectibles, music, movies, and newsstand to aid customers and support product goals.
• Participate in training to become proficient with store technology (registers, computers, tablets, programs).
• Develop merchandising and visual merchandising skills for books and other product categories.

Requirements

• Reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
• Flexibility to fill scheduling gaps and work varied hours (early mornings to late evenings, weekends, most holidays).
• Positive, energetic approach to work; works hard and reliably.
• Supportive and considerate of teammates; helps others and shows kindness.
• Consistently cheerful with customers; goes out of the way to assist.
• Aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and acquire store knowledge.

• Ability to perform physical tasks: prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking.
