Job Summary

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller you welcome customers, answer questions, and connect readers with the right titles and products. You also help maintain the store’s presentation, unpack and shelve deliveries, keep displays tidy, and operate the registers efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Greet customers cheerfully, answer inquiries, and provide personalized book recommendations.
• Operate registers quickly and professionally, handling transactions accurately.
• Unpack, receive, and shelve deliveries; maintain organized back‑stock.
• Maintain attractive merchandising and visual displays across books, gifts, toys, games, music, movies, and newsstand items.
• Assist the café team when needed.
• Use technology tools (registers, computers, tablets, BookMaster, etc.) to locate items and process sales.
• Follow loss‑prevention procedures and de‑escalation techniques to address theft or problematic behavior.
• Support other stores in the cluster when required.
• Continuously develop product knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, educational toys, specialty games, hobby collectibles, and more.
• Contribute to sales initiatives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership drives, pre‑orders, and new‑release promotions.

Required Skills & Competencies

• Comfortable using varied technology (registers, computers, tablets, store software).
• Strong merchandising and visual‑display skills.
• Ability to run a register accurately and efficiently.
• Proficiency in receiving, unpacking, and shelving merchandise.
• Effective use of BookMaster and other information tools to locate items.
• Understanding of loss‑prevention and de‑escalation techniques.
• Physical stamina for prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking.

Pay

Hourly rate starts at $17.25 and can increase up to $18.75, depending on experience, seniority, geographic location, and applicable legal factors.

Schedule

Flexible full‑time or part‑time shifts covering early mornings to late evenings, seven days a week, including most holidays. Employees are expected to fill scheduling gaps when possible.
