About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. Equally, you are an essential part of the bookstore team in maintaining the attractive presentation of the store and in ensuring its efficient running. You help unpack and shelve deliveries and tidy our displays. You work our registers in a quick and friendly manner, ensuring our customers receive a highly professional service.

Responsibilities

• Welcome customers, answer questions, and connect readers with appropriate titles and products.
• Maintain store presentation: unpack and shelve deliveries, tidy displays, keep merchandise attractive.
• Operate registers quickly and friendly, ensuring professional service.
• Develop merchandising skills for books, gifting, toys, and other product categories.
• Support receiving and unpacking of deliveries, and accurate shelving.
• Find books and products using knowledge, colleagues, BookMaster, and information tools.
• Support café team when needed.
• Understand loss prevention procedures and de‑escalation techniques; identify theft and seek support for problematic behavior.
• Maintain reliable and punctual attendance; fill scheduling gaps as needed.
• Demonstrate positive, energetic approach to work; be supportive and considerate of colleagues.
• Show aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and acquire store knowledge.
• Enjoy being a bookseller and contribute to store success.
• As experience grows, develop book knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, children’s books; make effective recommendations; support sales objectives (Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders, etc.).
• Build expertise in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music and movies, Newsstand; use this knowledge to maintain sections, backstock, and assist customers.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures.
• Be prepared to work in other stores as needed to support the wider cluster.

• Willingness to work varying shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and most holidays.

Schedule

• Store operates from early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays.
• Booksellers are expected to be flexible and responsive to store needs, filling scheduling gaps when able.
