About the role
Shipfitters (Boilermakers) begin with instruction in shielded metal arc tacking at the Welding School. After qualifying, students rotate through various production areas to develop their skills. The Boilermaker program is a 3-year curriculum that includes:
- Blueprint reading
- Mathematics
- Modern steel shipbuilding
- General shipfitting practices
- Fundamentals of drafting
- Structural quality
Students learn cutting, heating, and burning techniques using hand-held torches and automated processes, with an emphasis on safe operating procedures. They cut and shape steel plating, perform layout using mathematical functions, and use various measuring devices in both metric and standard formats as they relate to the ship's frame, hull, and superstructure. The program also covers shipyard terminology, tools, equipment, and processes to build foundational knowledge of Ingalls Shipyard industry.
Requirements
- High school graduate or GED equivalent
- Must provide the following at final interview:
- High school or GED transcript (not diploma)
- Driver’s license or state ID
- DD214 (if former military)
Preferred Qualifications
- MS. Scholar Tech Master Certification
