About the role
Boilermaker position focused on maintenance within a coal-fired power plant. Responsibilities include removing, replacing, and repairing various piping systems and boiler components such as soot blowers, burners, and dampers. Experience with flue gas desulfurization processes and equipment is required. The role involves troubleshooting machinery, dismantling and reassembling pumps, and working at heights and in confined spaces.
Responsibilities
- Read specifications to determine scope of work, including locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required.
- Identify all tools required for tasks and use them properly.
- Identify safety risks and implement precautions to eliminate those risks.
- Fabricate equipment according to blueprints or supervisor instructions.
- Hoist equipment and tools into location using bull rigging or crane.
- Perform steel fabrication using torches, band saws, plasma cutters, grinders, etc.
- Conduct minor pipe fabrication, including pulling field measurements to repair or replace pipe sections.
- Prepare pipe and steel for welding procedures.
- Follow directions from supervision.
- Perform all job duties of the craft trade and know when to stop work for safety concerns or misinformation.
- Read and interpret basic blueprints, craft specifications, and craft procedures.
- Locate piece marks for correct views and determine correct installation based on orientation.
- Apply knowledge of symbols based on legend.
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe rigging practices and components (e.g., chokers, slings, come-a-longs, chain hoists).
- Dictate correct knots based on material and tie knots for tag lines or lashing.
- Understand all aspects of connecting, including bolt-ups, valve installations, and proper use of a torque wrench.
- Read cut sheets, lay out from drawings, cut material, and plan work execution.
- Use specialty tools (e.g., torque wrench, mill hogg, torch, plasma cutter, chop saws, mag drills, Hogan drills).
- Demonstrate knowledge of cutting torch setup, usage, dangers, and types of tips.
- Operate and perform basic maintenance on equipment such as JLG man baskets, forklifts, and cranes.
- Follow safe operations practices, including signaling and flagging of equipment.
- Perform basic math (footage, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions) for craft duties.
- Perform additional duties as instructed.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience as a Boilermaker.
- NCCER certification (written or NCCER Plus).
- Ability to meet all physical requirements, including working at heights and in confined spaces.
- Possession of all required tools (see tool list).
- Reliable transportation.
- Ability to work a rotating schedule, including nights and weekends.
- Self-motivated.
- Valid driver’s license.
