About the role
Operate the Luther College Heating Plant to ensure a constant supply of steam for the campus.
Responsibilities
- Operate boilers safely, handling emergencies as needed.
- Perform water tests; maintain boilers, softeners, and condensate systems.
- Maintain daily records and perform required pool tests and filter maintenance.
- Test and maintain steam lines and cooling towers, ensuring proper chemical levels and operation.
- Record operational data for chillers and water softeners, and review automated logic systems.
- Log operational data for system cost review and perform preventative work or repairs from the work order system.
- Handle plumbing and mechanical requests, including replacing lamps, shutting off circuits, and resetting circuit breakers.
- Assist with welding/brazing and metal fabrication tasks as needed.
- Be available to handle weekend work requests and assist with unloading fuel transports.
- Supervise student workers as needed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma required.
- Experience with boiler operation and mechanical/electrical background preferred.
- Computer skills for spreadsheets, monitoring building automation systems, email, etc.
- Ability to diagnose and solve problems.
- Must be able to read and interpret blueprints.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- May need to supervise student workers.
Physical Demands
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps; not afraid of heights; walk or stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and hold 75 pounds, frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to 50 pounds, lifting and holding 10-25 pounds above head.
- Manual dexterity to operate equipment including scissors lifts, power tools, and hand tools.
- Ability to work for extended periods with arms above head.
Work Environment
- Inside and outside buildings, working in temperatures ranging from heated rooms to extreme heat and cold.
- High noise levels.
- Extreme temperature changes.
- Buildings and grounds are smoke/tobacco free.
- Shifts up to 12 hours, night shifts possible, overtime may be required.
- Rotating weekends and being on call.
- Some areas may be poorly ventilated or heavily congested.
- Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, noise, dust, and fumes.
- Will need to work in restricted places which may require stooping, bending, and kneeling.
