About the role

A Body Shop Journeyist is responsible for making complex repairs on all UTA vehicles, including body and paint work, fabrication, and training other employees with new skills.

Responsibilities

  • Make complex repairs on all UTA vehicles using various mechanic's tools
  • Rebuild and fabricate components with little or no supervision
  • Teach and/or assist employees of lesser skills in developing their skills and high standards of competence
  • Apply vinyl, striping, and graphics
  • Perform automotive and industrial painting
  • Complete welding, plasma cutting, and fabrication tasks
  • Complete estimates and accident repair estimates
  • Work closely with others in a team environment
  • Perform all aspects of safe and proper painting procedures
  • Work unsupervised while maintaining safety consciousness at all times

Requirements

  • Diploma or certificate from a two-year technical school in mechanical trades, or one and a half years of related trade school experience, or equivalent apprenticeship program training
  • I-car or ASE certification accepted
  • Able to acquire welding certificate including MIG, aluminum, and stainless steel welding
  • Able to acquire forklift sit-down counterbalance certification (provided by UTA)
  • Able to acquire crane certification (provided by UTA)
  • Knowledgeable in fiberglass and composite repairs
  • Have required tools
  • Able to acquire and maintain DOT physical card
  • Able to perform physical requirements of the job, including:
    • Walking long distances quickly on uneven surfaces
    • Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs regularly and over 51 lbs occasionally on uneven surfaces
    • Prolonged periods of standing, crawling, and laying on uneven surfaces
    • Working in tight and awkward positions
    • Working outside in all weather conditions
    • Safely working at heights above 16 feet
    • Constant awareness of surroundings
  • Able to acquire and maintain Roadway Worker Protection Certification
  • Able to acquire and maintain Blue Flag Worker Protection Certification
  • Able to acquire and maintain UTA Wayside Power Certification
  • Valid Utah Driver’s License
  • Safe driving record with no more than 4 moving violations in the past 3 years
  • No more than 1 violation of driving under the influence of alcohol, any drug, or the combined influence within the last 10 years

Qualifications

  • Three years of previous work experience in the body industry or related trade school experience or equivalent apprenticeship program training
  • Experience in applying vinyl, striping, and graphics
  • Certification in automotive and industrial painting
  • One year of welding experience, including welding and plasma cutting
  • One year of fabrication experience
  • Able to pass the Class A Body Shop exam

Skills

  • Extensive design and fabrication skills
  • Body work and paint skills
  • Knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Understanding of electrical and pneumatic schematics for multimodal transit vehicle systems
  • Knowledge of CNC machine equipment preferred

Pay

$36.82 per hour, plus a $2,000 hiring incentive.

Schedule

6:00 am to 4:30 pm with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. *Shift and days off subject to change.
