Orion is seeking an experienced Boat Captain to support marine construction operations in the Houston area. This position is responsible for the safe operation of company tugboats and barges while transporting personnel, equipment, and materials to and from active marine construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate tugboats and barges to and from marine construction project locations.
  • Maneuver, position, turn, stop, and control vessels to support field operations.
  • Perform daily inspections of the tugboat and identify operational or maintenance concerns, including hull integrity, steering systems, packing glands, mooring lines, and associated equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with the U.S. Coast Guard, commercial vessels, and marine traffic using VHF radio.
  • Secure vessels using appropriate lines and rigging while recognizing potential hazards.
  • Maintain compliance with all company safety policies and Coast Guard regulations.
  • Support project operations while maintaining a strong commitment to Orion's safety culture.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by project leadership.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of Boat Captain experience operating tugboats.
  • Master Boat License required.
  • Thorough knowledge of Inland Navigation Rules ("Rules of the Road").
  • Experience operating tugboats and barges on inland waterways.
  • Proficient in marine radio communications.
  • Strong understanding of vessel inspections, preventative maintenance, and safe marine operations.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a marine construction team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to board and disembark barges, tugboats, vessels, and dock facilities.
  • Ability to climb ladders up to 40–50 feet.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to respond appropriately during emergency situations.

Location: Houston, Texas. Local Houston-area candidates are strongly preferred.
