Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of BMS Engineering is responsible for advancing Fluence's capabilities in battery management systems to enable efficient scaling, innovation, and long-term customer value in the energy storage sector.

  • Lead product engineering and innovation initiatives for development of Fluence’s BMS platform and products, ensuring alignment with business goals, customer requirements, and long-term scalability and fostering a collaborative environment for ideation, prototyping, and deployment.
  • Build, develop, and mentor a high-performing BMS engineering team focused on innovation, systems architecture, and advanced product delivery.
  • Oversee requirements gathering, traceability, and verification for all BMS-related deliverables, and implement robust development practices and tools.
  • Work with product management, engineering, commercial, and operations teams to establish and execute a multi-year product roadmap for Fluence BMS solutions, with a focus on innovation velocity, modular design, and market differentiation.
  • Oversee lifecycle ownership of BMS solutions—from concept and prototyping through to development, launch, and continuous improvement in the field.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key global partners, universities, and technology providers to scout emerging trends and integrate leading-edge technologies into Fluence’s BMS platforms.
  • Champion the implementation of digital intelligence and edge computing in energy storage controls for predictive diagnostics, energy forecasting, and grid interaction.
  • Ensure compliance with global and regional regulatory and certification frameworks and promote a design culture that incorporates safety, performance, sustainability, and cybersecurity at every product stage.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in energy storage, grid technology, or adjacent sectors, including 10+ years of product or innovation leadership.
  • Deep expertise in battery management systems (BMS), energy storage system design, and control architecture.
  • Deep understanding of BMS architecture, power electronics, and real-time control firmware.
  • Proven experience with RTOS, embedded C/C++, I2C, SPI, UART, and battery communication protocols (CAN, ISO 11898).
  • Familiarity with functional safety concepts and standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or ISO13849.
  • Proven track record of delivering commercially successful, innovative technology platforms in complex hardware/software environments.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to communicate technical strategy to executive leadership, customers, and partners.
  • Demonstrated success managing global, matrixed engineering teams.

Required Education

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Engineering, Product Innovation, Energy Systems, or a related technical discipline.
  • Certifications or advanced training in electronics development, embedded software safety, firmware architecture, or real-time systems are highly desirable.
