About the role
The Boeing Company’s IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship Program offers a 4-year paid apprenticeship in the Puget Sound region of Washington State, combining 8,000 hours of on-the-job training with at least 144 unpaid classroom hours each school year at a local Community and Technical College. Wages progress with each 1,000 hours of recorded training until program completion, at which point apprentices graduate as journey-level Blue Streak Mechanics with a globally recognized journey-worker certificate and card.
Responsibilities
- Fabricate details and assemblies by hand or mechanical means to support production, Aircraft on Ground (AOG), and critical spares requirements.
- When prints, templates, or tools are unavailable, develop and fabricate complex temporary shop-aid templates and tools, including forming compound curvatures and angles.
- Use obsolete blueprints, advanced shop mathematics, trigonometry, descriptive geometry (layout and lofting), geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and CATIA to complete fabrication tasks.
- Collaborate with Engineering to redesign production and spare parts, including cross-section cuts and flat pattern development using manual or computer-aided methods.
- Operate machinery such as drill presses, saws, and mills to fabricate parts.
- Create templates, tools, and splash molds from obsolete drawings and sample parts from existing aircraft.
- Define part configuration and perform layout and lofting using CATIA as required.
- Ensure detail and assembly fabrication meets drawing configurations and tolerances.
- Perform riveting, bonding, and sealing during assembly processes.
- Obtain work orders and drawings, determine necessary materials and fasteners, and verify material quantity and quality assurance acceptance.
- Develop three-dimensional aids using sheet metal practices and shop mathematics, including layout and lofting methods.
- Cut, bend, punch, and dimple sheet metal parts to proper dimensions and preparation for installation.
- Assemble parts using rivets and bolts with correct tools and techniques per engineering requirements.
- Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in approved ways and obtain supplies for finishes such as alodine, primer, sealant, and adhesives.
- Conduct first-part checks for conformance, mark parts for identification, and leave oral or written tie-ins for following shifts.
- Rework and incorporate changes to assemblies to meet engineering specifications and coordinate with engineering on manufacturing challenges.
- Maintain personal and tool certifications as required.
Physical Demands and Potential Hazards
- Lift weights ranging from 10–15 lbs to 15–35 lbs.
- Perform movements including reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.
- Work in environments involving contact with metals, solvents, and coolants; operate near moving parts, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards; adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.
- Use personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet.
Requirements
- At least 18 years of age.
- Eligible for hire or rehire at Boeing.
- Never enrolled in or completed an IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship program.
- High school diploma or GED.
- US person status as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.62 (US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee).
- Proficiency in English and math verified by one of the following:
- Completion of English 99 or higher, or a college placement test placing into English 101 or higher.
- Completion of Intermediate Algebra within the last 5 years, or a college placement test placing into Precalculus, Trigonometry, or higher.
- Placement tests must have been taken within the last 5 years; self-placement tests are not accepted.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following pathways and provide verification via transcripts, certifications/degrees, or resume:
- Vocational courses: Basic Blueprint Reading or equivalent; Basic Precision Measuring Tools or equivalent.
- Vocational certificates and degrees: Composite Technician Certificate; Manufacturing Composite Certificate; Aerospace Composite Technician Certificate; Advanced Composites Manufacturing Technician Certificate.
- 1-year work experience in a similar field: Bench Mechanic; Boring Mills (Vertical, Horizontal); Computer Numerical Control; Drills (Radial, Press, NC); Duct Prep and Fit (for Weld); Fastener Removal (Rivets, Hi-Loks, Screws, etc.); Flight Control/Control Surface Repair (Flaps, Rudders, Slats); Forming (Roll, Hydro, Stretch, or Brake); Grinding (Internal, External, Surface, Thread); Heat Treat; Jig Bore, Jig Grinder; Lathes (Conventional, NC, CNC, Turret); Layout (Conventional, CMM); Layout & Lofting (Sheet Metal, Non-Metallic, Composite); Mills (Conventional, NC, CNC, Profile); Relocating, re-drilling, and reaming holes to size; Sheet Metal Assembly, Sheet Metal Details; Tooling, Tool Making; Trade-related Bench Work.
Pay
$44.53 per hour.
Schedule
Position is for first shift, with potential training on second shift.
