The Apprentice Mechanic has the ability to troubleshoot major and minor mechanical problems, as well as the ability to repair and adjust all necessary mechanical components. Work assignments will be received in the form of oral or written work orders, but the employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs. Reports To Shop Manager.

Responsibilities

• Maintains, repairs and overhauls heavy vehicles and industrial equipment
• Interprets work orders and technical manuals
• Keeps equipment clean, lubricated and maintained
• Diagnoses faults or malfunctions
• Adjust equipment and repairs or replaces defective parts, components or systems
• Obey all workplace health and safety and code of conduct workplace rules
• Undertake the training and assessment required under the training plan

Qualifications

• Ability to perform physical requirements of the job — repetitive lifting, pushing, pulling and climbing
• Ability to work in all weather conditions
• Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills
• Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
• Experience with routine maintenance operations is required
• Must be 21 years of age or older

Skills

• Waste industry experience, a plus
• Completion of college or vocational or technical training, a plus
• A valid CDL driver license is a plus

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Handling heavy tools and parts, sometimes lifting up to 70 pounds
• Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and working in awkward positions
• Fine motor skills for handling small parts and tools
• Typically work in garages or workshops, which may be noisy, have unpleasant odors, and limited ventilation
• Exposure to chemicals, oils, and other hazardous substances
• Often required to wear protective gear, such as gloves and safety glasses
• May be required to lift up to 75 pounds
• While performing duties, regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
• Occasionally required to stand and walk
• Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
