About the role

Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk) manages hazards and risks through high-value services, products, and research. The Protective Structures Section evaluates and designs structures exposed to extreme loading conditions such as blast, thermal, and high-velocity impacts. Responsibilities include designing buildings to protect people in hazardous environments, containing accidental explosions in manufacturing bays, and collaborating with government agencies to protect occupants from hostile threats. Design and evaluation approaches are validated through research, testing, and investigation of catastrophic events. BakerRisk operates two test facilities—the Wilfred E. Baker Test Facility and Box Canyon Test Facility—where scale and full-scale testing of building structures is conducted. This role is based in either the San Antonio or Houston, Texas office.

Responsibilities

  • Perform nonlinear blast response analysis
  • Complete detailed structural design and develop design concepts
  • Prepare design specifications
  • Support research and accident investigations
  • Develop and review structural drawings
  • Review numerical calculations
  • Coordinate with other technical disciplines at BakerRisk, including Process Safety and Blast Effects

Requirements

  • BS in Civil/Structural Engineering (MS preferred)
  • Education must include analysis and design of structures (steel, concrete, and masonry) using simplified and advanced methods
  • 0 to 5 years of experience or strong interest in one or more of the following: structural design of buildings, structural dynamics due to impulsive loads, structural evaluation of existing buildings, forensics engineering, structural analysis software, and/or finite element analysis
  • Ability to perform tasks assigned by project managers of limited scope, requiring knowledge of structural engineering principles
  • Willingness to travel 25%-30% of the time
  • Excellent communication and writing skills

Skills

  • Experience developing Structural Drawing packages (plans, elevations, details)
  • Familiarity with commercial structural analysis software such as SAP 2000
  • Familiarity with finite element modeling such as LS DYNA
  • Familiarity with Revit

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or above with a focus in structural engineering (Bachelor’s degree may be acceptable with prior work experience as a structural engineer)
  • Work ethic and office professionalism consistent with BakerRisk's high technical standards
