Biospecimen Procurement Tech
Job Summary
Procures and manages biospecimens for clients, research studies, clinical trials and further testing. Ensures specimens are handled in accordance with regulatory requirements, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and biosafety standards while maintaining specimen integrity throughout the lifecycle.
- Collaborates with laboratory staff, research partners, quality teams, and clinical personnel to ensure accurate specimen management and timely delivery of laboratory services.
Biospecimen and Client Management
Biospecimen and Client Management – 70%
- Receive, accession, label, and process blood and other human biospecimens.
- Perform specimen aliquoting, centrifugation, plasma/serum separation, and other processing procedures according to established protocols.
- Verify specimen identification and ensure chain of custody requirements are maintained.
- Assess specimens for acceptability and document discrepancies.
- Prepare specimens for internal testing, long-term storage, or shipment.
- Maintain inventory of biospecimens using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or other tracking software.
- Store specimens under appropriate environmental conditions, including refrigerated, frozen, and ultra-low temperature storage.
- Monitor specimen storage equipment and document temperature records.
- Conduct routine inventory audits and reconcile discrepancies.
- Respond to client concerns in a timely and courteous manner.
- Manage logistical aspects to ensure biospecimens are collected and provided to clients in a timely and courteous manner.
- Procure biospecimens as directed by client.
Equipment and Supply Management
Equipment and Supply Management – 20%
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), CAP, AABB, FDA, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Follow all Standard Operating Procedures and quality management processes.
- Participate in internal audits, quality improvement initiatives, and corrective actions.
- Report specimen quality issues or deviations promptly.
- Package and ship biological specimens following IATA, DOT, and institutional shipping requirements.
- Receive incoming specimens and verify documentation.
- Cookbook specimen transfers with internal departments and external research partners.
- Maintain laboratory supplies and inventory.
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain laboratory work areas.
- Perform routine maintenance and quality control on laboratory equipment.
- Assist with validation studies and implementation of new laboratory procedures as assigned.
Quality & Compliance
Quality & Compliance – 10%
- Adhere to all biosafety, infection prevention, and OSHA requirements.
- Properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Dispose of biohazardous materials according to established procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of donor, patient, and research participant information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
