Biomedical Technician

About the Role

This ship-based position involves performing preventative maintenance of medical equipment as directed by the Senior Biomedical Technician. The role may require living off-ship in a team house and spending approximately 2-3 days per week training local biomedical technicians in hospitals, with the remainder of the time assisting ship-based biomedical technicians. The position may also include providing education and training for partner country participants, trainees, and students in Mercy Ships training programs while delivering clinical care.

• Anesthetic systems
• Ventilators
• CR X-ray and CT systems
• Ultrasound imaging devices
• OR and Ward equipment
• YAG lasers and ophthalmic devices
• Autoclaves
• Oil-free compressors
• Dental suites
• Generators up to 35KVA

Responsibilities

• Complete assigned preventive maintenance and other scheduled services.
• Document all repair activity in the AIMS Biomedical Software equipment tracking and repair system.
• Perform diagnostic repairs of equipment and systems; report higher-level repair needs to the supervisor.
• Communicate with end users regarding equipment status and proper operation.
• Participate in providing biomedical training to hospital personnel in the country currently served by the ship.
• Solve practical problems with limited standardization; interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schematic form.
• Adapt skills in challenging work settings, including onboard equipment and off-ship clinic sites.
• Work with and assist other technical staff to ensure consistency in operations.
• Ensure customer satisfaction and problem resolution; identify areas for process improvement.
• Assist with securing electronic equipment prior to sails to maximize protection.
• Attend and participate in devotions, hospital receptions, and other hospital functions as needed.
• May participate in Mercy Ships training programs as an educator/preceptor for local healthcare providers and students.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Full, clean driving license preferred; expected to drive as part of departmental responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Technical or academic training satisfactory for the position (e.g., Electronics, Biomedical, Clinical, or Electronic Engineering).
• 2 years’ experience as a Biomedical Technician, preferably as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician.
• Preference given to candidates with previous mission work in a related (biomedical) environment and involvement in local biomedical training programs.
• Commitments longer than 10 months require successful completion of the Onboarding program.
