Biological Science Technician (Fish).

Responsibilities

• Assist the hatchery crew in providing daily care to endangered Lost River and Shortnose Sucker in an aquaculture facility.
• Assist with field work that includes collection of wild larvae and monitoring of fish grow out in lake net-pen operations.
• Stock fish for repatriation.
• Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Requirements

• Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
• Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Direct Deposit participation required.
• Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Required to wear a uniform and comply with uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
• May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• May be required to serve a 1-year probationary or two-year trial period.

Qualifications

GS-06 Grade Level

Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service, including:

• Performing work at a fish hatchery checking water quality, feeding fish, cleaning tanks, and treating fish diseases.
• Handling, tagging, and transporting juvenile and adult fish.
• Performing maintenance on equipment, facility infrastructure, and grounds (e.g., mowing, trimming).
• Entering, organizing, and performing QA/QC on hatchery data.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent graduate degree in a related field (e.g., fish biology, aquaculture, limnology, ichthyology). Transcripts required.

OR

Combination: A combination of education and experience as listed above that totals 100% of the requirement. Resume must include hours per week worked, and transcripts are required.

GS-07 Grade Level

Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service, including:

• Performing work at a fish hatchery checking water quality, feeding fish, cleaning tanks, identifying fish pathogens, calculating dosages, and treating fish diseases.
• Leading pond harvest efforts, running fish tagging stations, and independently transporting juvenile and adult fish.
• Leading maintenance efforts for hatchery fleet, gear, grounds, and specialized water quality/laboratory equipment, including record keeping and inventory management.
• Using specialized computer applications to enter, organize, and perform preliminary analysis of data from studies.
• Assisting biologists and managers in drafting sections of progress reports, technical reports, briefing papers, and presentations to communicate scientific information.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent graduate degree in a related field (e.g., fish biology, aquaculture, limnology, ichthyology). Transcripts required.

OR

Combination: A combination of education and experience as listed above that totals 100% of the requirement. Resume must include hours per week worked, and transcripts are required.

Volunteer Experience: Includes paid and unpaid experience, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and may count toward qualifying experience.

Education

• Transcripts must be submitted if using education to qualify. Must include name, school, grades, credit hours, major, GPA/class ranking, and degree conferral date (if applicable). Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for application, but official transcripts are required if selected.
• Foreign education must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign credential interpretation to determine U.S. equivalency.
