About the role

Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of auxiliary binding machines containing several cutting heads, control surfaces, or other attachments (e.g., inkjet and mailing devices, case making & decorating equipment, folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines). May set up automatic bindery machines containing multiple functions and station capabilities (power paper cutters, power collators and gatherers, power folders, power speed binder) that can be electromechanically combined with other equipment to produce a complete bindery and finishing unit. This unit processes printed sheets into final books, catalogs, manuals, directories, magazines, or other completed products.

  • Inspect equipment for safety issues.
  • Operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) with numerous interrelated process stations that perform functions such as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering, and delivering or stacking completed books, magazines, or catalogs.
  • Make adjustments to coordinate multiple work stations on a single machine.
  • Direct crew through all aspects of production.
  • Monitor quality, output, and productivity.

Responsibilities

  • Familiarity with different paper weights, sizes, kinds, and colors to identify paper conditions (e.g., excessive moisture or curling) that may require additional machine adjustment.
  • Use basic mathematics (e.g., decimals, metric units) to understand dimensional requirements in job orders and make complex adjustments.
  • Adjust and maintain bindery machines using standard and specialized tools (e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives) provided by the machine manufacturer.
  • Read and interpret written work instructions to determine the number and sequence of machine operations while maintaining dimensional accuracy.
  • Apply knowledge of operating procedures for bindery equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, and binding/gluing machines.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate equipment to perform standard and specialized folding, collating, and cutting of printed materials for finished products.

Pay

The pay range for this role is $21.85 - $26.93 per hour. The actual rate may vary based on education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift, and location. Total compensation may also include overtime, shift differential, call-in, and stand-by pay.
