BIM (Alaska) Senior DS Travel Engineer
About the role
This position provides technical expertise to modernize network design and implementation, supporting multiple Air Force and Space Force bases. As a Senior Distribution Systems Travel Engineer, you will be a key technical resource for survey and implementation efforts. This role involves close collaboration with base counterparts to facilitate the planning, execution, testing, and sustainment of the network's wired functionality. The position is fully onsite at Eielson Air Force Base and requires residence in the Fairbanks area.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide solutions to problems and guidance to less experienced field engineers.
- Guide the installation of advanced or new technologies based on customer needs.
- Support and conduct end-to-end testing of fiber optic cables using OTDR, power meters, and other tools.
- Cookordination with Government Points of Contact (POCs) for design, installation, and base access to ensure project tasks are completed on time.
- Provide input into the distribution systems design (ISP/OSP) and offer technical recommendations.
- Lead small implementation teams or manage specific work scopes for a given site location.
- Develop technical project plans, proposals, and reports.
- Update network as-built documentation and records based on testing results.
- Attend customer meetings and serve as a primary network engineering liaison.
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant technology.
Required Qualifications
- A BA/BS degree with 5+ years of experience in Distribution Systems Engineering, particularly in an IT upgrade project environment.
- Familiarity with distribution systems (ISP/OSP) design and implementation documents, including design documentation, as-built diagrams, rack elevations, and circuit connectivity matrices.
- Knowledge of all aspects of fiber testing.
- A thorough understanding of wired and general IT functions.
- Ability to work effectively in a virtual teaming environment.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and documents.
- A strong commitment to a team environment and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Excellent coordination, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using MS Visio or related CAD tools.
- BICSI related certifications.
