About the Role

We're looking for a detail-oriented, part-time Medical Biller to manage the billing cycle for our outpatient mental health practice. This role is responsible for accurate claims submission, proactive insurance follow-up, and clear communication with clients about their accounts. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, knows behavioral health billing nuances (session-based CPT codes, authorizations, timely filing limits), and takes ownership of getting claims paid.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit accurate insurance claims (CMS-1500) for individual, group, and family therapy sessions
  • Verify client insurance eligibility and benefits prior to or at intake
  • Obtain and track prior authorizations and session limits with payers
  • Post payments, adjustments, and denials; reconcile EOBs/ERAs against expected reimbursement
  • Proactively follow up on unpaid, denied, or underpaid claims with insurance companies
  • Research and resolve claim rejections and denials, including appeals when necessary
  • Manage client billing questions, statements, and payment plans with a client-centered approach
  • Track accounts receivable and flag aging balances for provider/owner review
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and payer-specific documentation requirements
  • Keep billing software and client records accurate and up to date
  • Chart auditing, checking CMS standards are being met.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of medical billing experience; behavioral/mental health billing strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of CPT codes common to mental health (e.g., 90791, 90834, 90837, 90847, 90853) and ICD-10 coding
  • Experience with insurance verification, authorizations, and appeals
  • Familiarity with EHR/practice management and clearinghouse systems (e.g., SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Kareo, Availity, or similar)
  • Strong follow-up skills and comfort making calls to insurance companies
  • High attention to detail and solid understanding of HIPAA requirements
  • Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or similar certification is a plus, not required. However upon hiring, candidate would need to complete a certification.

Job Details

  • Schedule: Part-time, approximately 10–20 hours per week; could move to full-time; flexible within business hours
  • Location: On-site in Clearfield, UT
  • Compensation: $18+ per hour, commensurate with experience/certification
  • Reports to: Office Manager
