About the role

The Clinician I for La Jornada works to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and youth for the assigned program. This is a license-eligible, early-career clinician position actively working toward professional licensure, providing clinical services under supervision while developing required competencies and clinical hours. The Clinician I works closely with children, youth, foster parents, and community partners, conducting mental health assessments, ongoing individual and group counseling services, screening for human trafficking concerns, and crisis intervention services toward the goal of unification with a sponsor family and living safely and successfully in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all work in a manner consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program’s mission, values, and philosophies.
  • Collaborate with the cross-functional service team to provide trauma-informed mental health-related services, including conducting required assessments, referrals to mental health providers, and assessments to identify human trafficking concerns.
  • Provide child-facing services on-site under supervision while developing required competencies and clinical hours.
  • Maintain an active clinical caseload pursuant to the assigned program ratio and consistently achieve established service delivery thresholds.
  • Provide orientation to children in care.
  • Conduct mental health assessments under supervision, including Risk, UC Assessments, Human Trafficking, RST assessment, safety plans, post-18 ages out plans, and other assessments as required by the assigned program within expected timeframes.
  • Screen for human trafficking concerns and provide crisis intervention services.
  • Monitor the mental well-being of clients and arrange for appropriate services, including external specialized services with community mental health providers.
  • Provide ongoing individual and group counseling services and facilitate family sessions as needed.
  • Contribute to crisis intervention if needed.
  • Coordinate and monitor services for youth and families in the community, including medical, educational, psychological, and social services.
  • Perform visits at foster caregivers’ homes within pre-established days from the child’s admission as needed.
  • Complete documentation regarding clients’ functioning, mental health status, and treatment needs.
  • Participate in staffing with the cross-functional team and stakeholders.
  • Travel to provide community-based services to, and on behalf of, youth and families in compliance with organizational, contract, and regulatory requirements.
  • Complete all required documentation and training in a timely manner and consistently achieve established productivity thresholds.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Master's or doctorate degree from an accredited program, university, or college in psychology, social work, counseling, marriage and family counseling, or other behavioral discipline in which clinical experience is a program requirement.
  • Must be license-eligible, actively working toward professional licensure providing clinical services under supervision while developing required competencies and clinical hours. (Non-licensed staff must attain licensure within 3 years of employment date).
  • Bilingual English/Spanish fluency required.
  • Willingness to work flexible and non-traditional hours, including nights/weekends, and be on call as needed.
  • Ability to organize, navigate, and physically escort youth to various travel destinations, including airlines, trains, and buses. Travel may include out-of-state trips up to 25%-30% to unify youth with families.
  • Minimum automobile insurance coverage of $100,000/300,000 bodily liability coverage.
  • 21 years of age, a valid state driver’s license, a reliable personal vehicle, and a good driving record.
  • Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, smartphones, tablets, printers, fax machines, and photocopiers, as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Follow ORR, CDC, and State COVID-19-related protocols.
  • Capacity to be flexible and responsive to youth served, foster caregivers, system partners, and internal/external stakeholders.

Physical Demands

  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity.
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying.
  • Ability to travel frequently and drive a vehicle while sitting for extended periods, with frequency varying based on program demands.
