About the role

This position serves as a bilingual/bicultural school-home assistant, liaising between parents, school, and project personnel to promote cooperation and understanding. The role involves addressing students' educational and related issues, disseminating project information, and encouraging parental involvement in school activities.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as liaison to assist in promoting cooperation and understanding between parents, and school and project personnel.
  • Serves as liaison to assist in solving students' educational and related problems.
  • Disseminates project information.
  • Explains school programs, policies and procedures to parents; translates and relates parents' concerns to project and school staff.
  • Sets up and maintains a file of community resources; suggests various resources to assist parents with their problems.
  • Suggests parents and others in the community with special skills as resource persons in the classrooms.
  • Encourages parents to participate in school activities.
  • Affirms and develops Parent Advisory Groups and encourages parents to participate.
  • Plans and conducts projects to increase parent participation in school-related activities.
  • Plans for and/or conducts information and interest sessions for parents.
  • Participates in various training programs; prepares activity reports.

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications: Two (2) years of paid or volunteer work experience in which the applicant worked with individuals and groups and was required to possess the following abilities or demonstrated same: Understand and explain various materials related to the program/project/activity; Establish and maintain rapport with individuals and groups and encourage participation in program/project activities; Speak effectively with individuals and groups and to elicit pertinent information; Plan and conduct group information sessions; Prepare activity reports; and, Recognize and identify basic individual human needs.
  • Specialized Experience Requirement: One (1) year's experience that provided the applicant with the following knowledge and skills: Knowledge of Ilokano, Marshallese or Spanish culture; Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the Ilokano, Marshallese or Spanish language; Ability to establish and maintain rapport with Ilokano, Marshallese or Spanish communities; Ability to establish and maintain rapport with Ilokano, Marshallese or Spanish communities.
  • Licenses Required: Current, valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Substitutions Allowed: Successful completion of a one (1) year Human Services Curriculum leading to a certificate of achievement at an accredited Community College and which included field experience in Community Service may be substituted for one (1) year of general experience. Successful completion of a two (2) year Human Services Curriculum leading to a degree at an accredited Community College and which included field experience in Community Service may be substituted for the general experience requirement. Partial completion of a substantially full-time Human Services Curriculum at an accredited Community College and which included field experience in Community Service may be substituted for the general experience on a month-for-month basis.

Skills

Knowledge of Ilokano, Marshallese or Spanish culture, ability to speak, read, write, and understand the Ilokano, Marshallese or Spanish language, ability to establish and maintain rapport with Ilokano, Marshallese or Spanish communities.

Benefits

Salary: Based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.

Pay

Salary Range: Bilingual/Bicultural School-Home Assistant, SR-11: $3,606.00 per month.

Schedule

Salary: The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.

Paycheck

Payday: The payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.

Additional Information

Temporary Assignment: Claims of Temporary Assignment (TA) experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements must be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below:

  • A copy of the applicant’s TA History Report or equivalent system-generated report;
  • A signed letter from the applicant’s supervisor that includes the applicant’s name, his/her TA job title, the TA start and end dates (from mm/yy to mm/yy), his/her specific TA duties performed, and either the TA hours worked per week or total TA hours worked;
  • Copies of the applicant’s signed SF-10 Forms.
