Behavioral Health Technician- Youth/Adolescent

Under general supervision, provides basic patient care to all patients including those in isolation. Assists with age-specific activities of daily living and therapeutic measures to reduce agitation and increase patient comfort. Supports daily activities, teaches new skills, ensures safety, manages behaviors, plans activities, reinforces treatment plans, and documents within the EMR.

Responsibilities

• Collects data (e.g., vital signs, weights, I&O) for initial, shift, and ongoing patient assessment as delegated by the RN per Department/Unit standards.
• Completes patient safety rounds and contraband checks.
• Demonstrates effective problem-solving skills and recommends improvements within unit, department, and hospital standards.
• Facilitates or co-facilitates patient goals, exercise groups, and other assigned groups.
• Recognizes and reports patient safety concerns or behavioral changes to the RN.
• Shares care activities/procedures among disciplines to maximize patient-centered, efficient care.
• Understands and applies General Safety/Falls Prevention Program (A-B-C-D risks and interventions).
• Utilizes department/unit techniques, protocols, and standards when providing care.
• Supervises patients at all times, ensuring basic needs are met and supporting treatment outcomes.
• Models positive behavior and effective problem-solving techniques.
• Assists with structured group activities.
• Completes required documentation, forms, and reports per policy.
• Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly unit; may assist with patient laundry as needed.
• Provides crisis intervention and initiates emergency response plans when necessary.
• Attends staff meetings and completes all required in-service training and coursework annually.
• Monitors patient phone calls and visitations as required.
• Reviews patient case histories and becomes familiar with treatment plan goals.
• Familiarizes self with Employee Manual, Operations Manual, and organizational policies.
• Performs CPR and basic elements as required utilizing CPI skills.
• Performs the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or GED.
• One to three months of related experience and/or training.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1 or more years of previous acute care psychiatric experience.
• 2 years of formal education in psychology, counseling, nursing, or a related field.

Certifications

• Basic Life Support Heartsaver (BLS HS) (Non-Clinical) – American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days of hire.

Skills

• Fluent in English (speaking and understanding).
• Proficient computer skills.

Schedule

• Full-time, part-time, or PRN nights.
