About the role
The Behavioral Health Technician supports the therapeutic milieu under the direction of the Registered Nurse. This role involves maintaining a safe environment, monitoring patients, assisting with admissions, and facilitating therapeutic activities.
Responsibilities
- Observation and maintenance of a safe milieu through patient checks and safety monitoring
- Completing close observation monitoring including 15-minute checks, line of sight, or one-on-one monitoring as ordered
- Making sure tasks are completed as delegated by the Registered Nurse, including vital signs, specimen collection, documentation, group education, and patient monitoring
- Managing the patient's experience positively
- Accompanying patients to off-unit activities and reporting any medical or psychiatric changes to the Registered Nurse
- Assisting with the admission process, including belongings inventory, visitation to unit, vital signs, and other duties as delegated
- Documenting property at admission, accounting for its usage during the stay, and reconciling it at discharge
- Ensuring compliance with policies and procedures for a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment
- Conducting unit safety checks each shift
- Encouraging and assisting patients in performing activities of daily living
- Facilitating or co-facilitating psychoeducational and therapeutic activity groups
- Employing appropriate crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques as required
- Maintaining current knowledge of the program and policy and procedure guidelines
- Providing pertinent feedback to the interdisciplinary treatment team
- Complying with hospital policy, OSHA, and CDC guidelines regarding the collection of various specimens
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED
- One year of previous experience working in a psychiatric health care facility preferred
- CPR certification within 30 days of employment and before any patient contact
- De-escalation certification within 30 days of employment and before any patient contact
