Behavioral Health Technician

About the role

The Behavioral Health Technician supports the therapeutic milieu under the direction of the Registered Nurse. This role involves maintaining a safe environment, monitoring patients, assisting with admissions, and facilitating therapeutic activities.

Responsibilities

• Observation and maintenance of a safe milieu through patient checks and safety monitoring
• Completing close observation monitoring including 15-minute checks, line of sight, or one-on-one monitoring as ordered
• Making sure tasks are completed as delegated by the Registered Nurse, including vital signs, specimen collection, documentation, group education, and patient monitoring
• Managing the patient's experience positively
• Accompanying patients to off-unit activities and reporting any medical or psychiatric changes to the Registered Nurse
• Assisting with the admission process, including belongings inventory, visitation to unit, vital signs, and other duties as delegated
• Documenting property at admission, accounting for its usage during the stay, and reconciling it at discharge
• Ensuring compliance with policies and procedures for a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment
• Conducting unit safety checks each shift
• Encouraging and assisting patients in performing activities of daily living
• Facilitating or co-facilitating psychoeducational and therapeutic activity groups
• Employing appropriate crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques as required
• Maintaining current knowledge of the program and policy and procedure guidelines
• Providing pertinent feedback to the interdisciplinary treatment team
• Complying with hospital policy, OSHA, and CDC guidelines regarding the collection of various specimens

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED
• One year of previous experience working in a psychiatric health care facility preferred
• CPR certification within 30 days of employment and before any patient contact
• De-escalation certification within 30 days of employment and before any patient contact
