Behavioral Health Supervisor
About the role
The Behavioral Health Supervisor is part of the Behavioral Health team at Ward 86 and serves as clinical leadership within the ward. This role provides administrative and clinical supervision to Patient Navigators and other behavioral health staff functioning as Patient Coordinators. Responsibilities include screening and assessing patients for service needs, psychosocial history, and presentation, as well as developing and executing care plans. The position may also oversee contract compliance and deliverables.
The Behavioral Health Supervisor works within a multidisciplinary HIV primary care team, including medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, patient navigators, and other clinical staff. The focus is on planning and supervising the delivery of patient coordination services to patients living with HIV, individuals at risk of HIV acquisition, and those with high psychosocial complexity.
This role involves supervising patient coordination services within assigned clinical programs, collaborating with clinical leads, and providing leadership on clinical matters as part of a multidisciplinary management team. Administrative duties include setting work schedules, resolving system issues, and managing complex cases and escalated clinical issues. The Behavioral Health Supervisor may also provide direct services to patients with complex psychosocial needs, such as those experiencing homelessness, substance use, or complex mental illness.
The position requires collaboration with internal care team members and external organizations providing supportive services to the patient population. It offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through direct patient care and by equipping patient coordinators and allied staff with the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources.
About the department
The Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is an internationally recognized leader in clinical care, research, and education. Based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), the Division has been ranked as the top facility in the country for AIDS care since 1983. It comprises approximately 38 faculty members, 16 fellows/postdoctoral scholars, and 170 academic and staff employees, making it the largest Division within the Department of Medicine at ZSFG.
Responsibilities
- Provide administrative and clinical supervision to Patient Navigators and behavioral health staff.
- Screen and assess patients for service needs, psychosocial history, and presentation.
- Develop and execute care plans for patients.
- Oversee contract compliance and deliverables.
- Supervise patient coordination services operations within assigned clinical programs.
- Collaborate with clinical leads and multidisciplinary management teams.
- Provide leadership and guidance on clinical matters.
- Handle administrative responsibilities, including setting work schedules and resolving system issues.
- Manage complex cases and escalated clinical issues.
- Provide direct services to patients with complex psychosocial needs, including those experiencing homelessness, substance use, or complex mental illness.
- Work collaboratively with internal care team members and external organizations providing supportive services.
Requirements
- A master’s degree in a behavioral health field (e.g., mental health, social welfare, counseling, psychology).
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and manage complex workflows and priorities in social work services.
- Experience supervising case management staff.
- Strong knowledge of behavioral health services, including case management, utilization review, discharge planning, home care, and/or managed care.
- Understanding of psychosocial issues facing the LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities.
- Experience working within Harm Reduction treatment models and utilizing Motivational Interviewing interventions.
- Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, including training, monitoring, evaluating, and documenting performance.
- Experience with contract compliance and monitoring.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to analyze problems and develop effective solutions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration across clinical disciplines.
- Knowledge of applicable business software and specialized applications/data management systems.
- Experience working with marginalized and culturally diverse populations, including LGBTQ communities and patients impacted by mental health, substance use, and homelessness.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in a psychiatric health specialty.

Pay
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range depends on factors such as work experience and internal equity within the position classification at UCSF. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
