Behavior Technician

About the Role

Primary responsibility is to implement behavioral health and educational services using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis with individuals diagnosed with autism, related mental health disorders, and/or intellectual disabilities in either a 1:1, 1:2, or small group setting. This is a full-time, hourly position.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver instruction and assessments following procedures learned from initial and ongoing training sessions and based on feedback from supervisors.
  • Implement skills acquisition and behavior modification plans as provided during training and from ongoing feedback.
  • Provide intensive behavioral health treatment, including skills development, problem-solving, conflict resolution, emotion/behavior management, developing positive coping mechanisms, and managing symptoms to enhance vocational, school, or independent living opportunities.
  • Implement crisis interventions as needed and when approved.
  • Collect and analyze data and records of service accurately following Boundless procedures.
  • Organize, prepare teaching and treatment materials, and maintain a clean instructional area.
  • Maintain designated individual’s data collection methods, documents, records, and materials related to treatment and educational plans.
  • Assist in monitoring goal progression and document when interventions are needed due to lack of progress.
  • Assist in maintaining files for compliance with applicable local, state, and federal standards; report unusual incidents and communicate unusual medical situations as required.
  • Perform first aid as trained and designated.
  • Complete treatment and education reviews for designated individuals as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in all treatment and educational team meetings, program meetings, and staff development days.
  • Seek, receive, and apply feedback professionally and work toward goals developed with supervisors.
  • Communicate professionally with coworkers, outside professionals, and parents, using appropriate language when describing individuals and/or behaviors.
  • Dress appropriately and arrive on time for work.
  • Participate in fundraising activities through distribution of materials and information.
  • Read and follow the employee handbook and all Boundless policies and procedures.
  • Complete all assigned trainings, including required physical crisis management training(s) and certification(s) within 60 days of hire.
  • May occasionally transport clients in a Boundless vehicle.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent, plus 3 or more years of experience in behavioral health, human services, or mental health.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR (adult, child, and infant) certification (training provided if not already certified).
  • Must be able to function independently with flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with individuals, staff, and support agencies.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, emotionally upset, and at times hostile clients/family members.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • One to two years of experience working directly with children and families.
  • Experience working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities.
  • Experience working with individuals with behavioral health conditions.
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License with Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles; proof of auto insurance (no more than 5 points on license).

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to complete trainings and apply knowledge when working with individuals served.
  • Ability to perform emergency medical procedures when necessary.
  • Requirement to lift, bend, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl regularly when implementing crisis interventions.
  • Ability to accurately document required therapy data.
  • Operate and conduct self in a professional manner at all times.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly in communication with individuals served, staff, family members, and the public.
  • Ability to accept and implement feedback and constructive criticism.
  • Intermediate computer skills.

Work Environment

This job regularly works in a center or assigned treatment program and may also work in the community, including schools, client homes, and other community settings. Routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to maintain physical exertion for multiple events across a shift, lasting up to 45 minutes per episode.
  • Ability to maintain a kneeling and/or crouching position for multiple events across a shift, lasting up to 45 minutes per episode.
  • Ability to stand for the majority of the shift.
  • Ability to respond quickly to sounds and dangerous situations.
  • Ability to wear personal protective and safety gear correctly for the majority of the shift.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to assume and maintain various postures (kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting, standing) for extended periods, including walking swiftly or running after individuals.
  • Ability to sit on the floor or stand for extended periods.
  • Willingness and ability to restrain, hold, or transport individuals as needed.
  • Ability to utilize quick body movements when working with individuals with challenging behavior.
  • Ability to remain awake for the entire assigned shift.
