About the role

The Behavior Support Technician (BST) is a district-level hourly classified position that supports students with the most severe behavior challenges in the district. BSTs work under the immediate direction of special education behavior specialists and general education behavior specialists and report to Special Education administrators as their formal supervisors.

BSTs intervene directly with students exhibiting severe behavior challenges, collect and manage data on student behavior, draft behavior interventions/plans (including environmental engineering), and train school-based paraeducators to replicate duties after students maintain stable behavior. BSTs participate in regular professional development and demonstrate competence in learned technical skills, including online behavior management modules, explicit training with specialists, and ongoing embedded training experiences.

Attendance and physical presence are required and are essential functions of this position.

Responsibilities

• Implement behavior strategies and/or provide one-to-one or small group instruction to students with challenging behaviors (e.g., physical aggression, self-harm, elopement, destruction of property, other dangerous behavior).
• Deliver direct instruction to students in special education and general education settings.
• Collect data on behavior and/or academic targets.
• Train and support school-based paraeducators in schools.
• Provide emergency support to students in crisis.
• Participate in regular professional development and embedded training, including MANDT training.
• Attend regularly scheduled training sessions held by district supervisors (several trainings monthly).
• Implement and monitor academic and behavior interventions as directed for application in all educational settings.
• Work flexible hours based on student needs.
• May be required to ride the school bus to and from school with student(s).
• Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
• Must have transportation to travel independently to various schools.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Independent transportation to travel to various schools.
• Previous work with students with behavior challenges preferred.
• Must currently hold or acquire a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification accredited by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BCBA) within 6 months of hire.
• Adhere to RBT credential requirements in addition to district-directed Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
• Ability to learn, describe, and apply a variety of behavior support and management techniques based on applied behavior analysis (e.g., proactive behavior, de-escalation strategies, physical interventions).
• Ability to apply acquired knowledge and skills consistently and with fidelity.
• Ability to follow directives from specialists/administrators.
• Demonstrate regular positive interactions with students and school staff under all circumstances.
• Implement and monitor academic and behavior interventions as directed for application in all educational settings.

Skills

• Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

• Must be able to speak and/or hear.
• Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
• Occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Assigned Decision Making

Makes decisions concerning the best way to accomplish assigned tasks. Must take directions well and work within specific guidelines. Makes suggestions but must be willing to follow directions. Concerns for the safety of self and others.

Interactions

Positive interaction with students, special education teachers, teachers, administrators, support staff, and supervisors.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervision of students if required to ride the bus with students.

Working Environment

Work setting is mainly in the classroom. May be asked to work inside and outside the building to accomplish assigned tasks. Working conditions can include hot and cold weather. May experience stress from disruptive students and/or groups of students.
