About the Role

To assist the teacher by monitoring and assisting students in the classroom and during other activities to ensure the provision of quality instruction in a safe environment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all rules, policies, procedures, and state/federal regulations pertaining to school issues.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Monitor work assigned by the teacher and praise/reinforce student achievement.
  • Make copies of materials and serve as a proctor during testing.
  • Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on individual student needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Maintain and improve professional competence; participate in the development and support of the school’s vision.
  • Monitor student behavior, maintain discipline, record time-outs and in-class suspensions, and assist with crisis prevention and de-escalation.
  • Constantly monitor student safety and well-being; encourage self-esteem.
  • Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, lunch, recess, specials, hygiene routines, and snack time.
  • Alert the teacher to any problems or special information about individual students.
  • Perform clerical duties: maintain records of student progress, file incident reports, grade papers, check attendance, make copies, develop displays, and operate audiovisual equipment.
  • Assist with large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
  • Maintain high ethical standards and confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Serve as the primary source of information and assistance for substitute teachers.
  • Perform related duties as requested by the teacher or principal.

Requirements

  • Two-year degree or 48 hours of college coursework.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Working knowledge of effective methods for dealing with children.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Clear and concise communication, both orally and in writing.
  • General knowledge of classroom activities, routines, student handbook rules, and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to adapt information to a child’s level of comprehension.
  • Ability to record and store data accurately.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically able to operate equipment such as computers and copiers.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects, including the human body, occasionally exerting up to 20 pounds of force.
  • Light work involving frequent walking or standing.

Pay

Starting salary based on NC State Salary Schedule Grade 56 ($17.32–$22.33 per hour).

Schedule

Ten-month employment, at-will, FLSA non-exempt.
