Reports to: Coordinator of Behavioral Health Services. Contract length: 202 days.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling
  • Minimum of three years experience as a school counselor
  • Valid state certificate endorsed in Guidance (Mississippi Certification Code 436)
  • Demonstrate understanding of federal and state special laws
  • Demonstrate understanding of inclusive education and differentiated instruction
  • Demonstrate understanding of behavior management techniques and methods
  • Demonstrate understanding of overall MTSS process as it relates to students’ behavioral experiences during the Functional Behavior Assessments process and the development of the Behavioral Intervention Plan

About the Role

To collaborate with educational staff in a team approach to plan, implement, supervise, and monitor effective positive behavioral intervention plans and behavioral intervention programs designed to meet the needs of students with behavioral challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Work side-by-side with teachers to assess students’ needs and to improve students’ behaviors
  • Provide functional behavioral assessments
  • Develop and facilitate the implementation of functional behavioral plans
  • Facilitate the development of behavior modification plans
  • Provide school behavior intervention support models
  • Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data
  • Remain readily available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity
  • Consult with teachers, administrators, and parents
  • Document program results, maintain accurate records and other required data, prepare and submit reports in a timely manner
  • Maintain strict student and parent confidentiality
  • Serve as a resource to provide formal and informal training, guidance, and assistance to students, educators, and parents
  • Keep current with issues, laws, and regulations regarding positive behavior interventions, special education, educational trends, and other issues related to children with exceptional needs
  • Perform other related duties as requested or assigned
  • Assist in the fostering and promotion of a positive school/office climate
  • Maintain a professional demeanor during all interactions between colleagues, parents, students, and administration

Pay

HCSD Pay Scale for Counselors – commensurate with experience.
